Neeraj Chopra scripted history today by winning the gold medal for India in Javelin throw at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Neeraj Chopra, a rising star of the discipline is nicknamed the Golden boy. He certainly has won gold in almost all the events he has participated in.
He secured gold with a throw of 87.58m in only his second attempt. He looked extremely prepared and confident. His preparedness is conspicuous with his throw in the qualification where his first throw was enough to get him through to the Finals of the event.
Gold was confirmed for him before he could take his final throw. Emotions were running high and it could be seen from his face. Even then he maintained his composure and had a decent throw. Years and years of preparation and the expectations of the entire nation did not get to his nerves and he delivered when needed.
Gold has come after a really long time for India at the Olympics in general and at athletics events in particular. Several of our athletes came very close but could not make it to the top three but finally, the medal drought in athletics has ended. Some of the greats of India who came closer to winning a medal in athletics were Milkha Singh, P.T. Usha and Anju Bobby George.
